Vintage Style Blanket

After the WIP post yesterday on our FB page some people asked for the pattern for the blanket so I thought that I should 'brush off' my old blogging fingers and create a little post about it here with some more information for anyone who would like to find out more.

I found the pattern a while ago on a gorgeous blog Italian Dish Knits. It is a lovely blog about food and yarn stuff. The author, Elaine wanted to teach herself to crochet and at the same time created a beautiful blanket called 'Crochet Squares Throw' which she kindly wrote a free pattern for.

You can see Elaine's pattern here.

I wanted to use the new colours from Stylecraft Special DK to make a delicate vinatage style blanket but with a modern feel and I loved the simplicity of the pattern so much that I wanted to use it as a base for my blanket.  The square in the original pattern was a little larger than I wanted to so I adapted it slightly.

The picture above shows the colours that I originally intended to use (colours on the picture read from the top left, clockwise with cream and candyfloss in the middle).  In the end I did not use the parma violet or the cream on the final blanket out of personal choice but you can see from all of the balls of yarn in the picture above that they would all work well together.

The pattern in the link is written in US terms so where the pattern calls for sc I used a double crochet (UK) and where the pattern uses dc I used treble crochet (UK). The only time that I did not switch the terms is for row 6 and row 9 where I did a UK dc stitch.  I did not do row 7 either so that the square would be a little smaller overall.

Here you can see the final square.

The squares were joined with a dc stitch using Parchment.  You can see the three new Stylecraft colours, vintage peach, buttermilk and mushroom below.

And here is the back, which I think looks just as
nice as the front ...

For the border I wanted to keep it simple again so used Parchment and one row of double crochet, then one row of treble crochet, skipping a stitch each time by chaining one between the treble crochet.  Vintage peach was used for the next row (double crochet all of the way around).  For the next row I used Parchment and double crocheted into the back of the stitch on the previous row before.  Finally another row of double crochet was used ...

 and the project was finished.
